15.A Train Journey To Discover Kerala

A train journey is the best possible option to explore the length and breadth of Kerala. Kerala being a tiny state can be reached from one end to the other in a day. Grab a window seat or stand at the door, to get wonderstruck at the greenery and beautiful natural scenery of Kerala landscape that pass by. Trains are cheaper than road transport and offer a convenient mode of transport for sight seeing.

Gaze out of the window as the monsoon rains beat down on your face or experience the lively milieu inside the compartment. The tea and coffee vendors, who call out the names of the goodies on sale and the noisy families with kids in tow, would definitely add vivacity to your journey.

A train journey would allow you to sample the laid back milieu of the villages. The loitering village kids will wave at you enthusiastically as the train chugs past paddy fields, coconut gardens, coir villages and the endless expanses of backwaters dotted with Chinese nets. You can experience the enviably slow pace of life in the many traditional tiled houses that subtly blend with the natural milieu. Women will be tending to cows or washing clothes in the streams quite oblivious of the happenings around.

A train journey not to be missed while in Kerala is the one from Punalur to Shencotta. Board this train to savour a slice of the rustic charm of the villages, the verdant foothills of Western Ghats and the breathtaking stone-arch bridge near Thenmala, famous for the prime ecotourism spot of the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary.
