Newsflash from Kerala

The Discount Festival - The festival of Onam has moved on to become a 'Festival of Discounts' in the 21st Century. From 'Payasam' (a traditional sweet dish) and 'Pookalam' (floral carpets of intricate designs created with petals), Onam has turned more commercial. It not  only coincides with the harvest season, but it is also that time of the year when the employed class get their bonus package. The shopkeepers are cashing on the festive spirit in the air and are all set to lure the customers with reduced rates on the goods. Unlimited and discount packages offerings in huge and brightly painted fonts in front of exclusive and petty shops are tempting enough for the customers. Add to it, the sudden rise in bank balance of the customers. It sure is a tough call to resist.
