Coconut Lagoon is a "heritage" style backwater resort. It is located in an erstwhile coconut plantation on the shores of Vembanad Lake about 30 miles south of Cochin. An ideal getaway for romantic holidays and family gatherings, Coconut Resort will charm you (as it charmed Paul McCartney) with its serenity, country side charm and lush greenery.
Kumarakom, where the hotel is situated, used to be an agricultural backwater of canals and gleaming rice paddies. Coconut Lagoon Kerala captures all the nuances of this quaint little island, and completes it with excellent facilities. One of the charms of the resort is that being surrounded by backwaters, it is only accessible only by boat.
The spirit of traditional Kerala is echoed in Coconut Lagoon. This resort came into being after traditional homesteads spread across Kerala were taken apart and carefully put together to give its present form. Heavily influenced by 'Thachu Shastra' , a traditional principle of architecture, the resort is an exotic concoction of ethnic designs and modern day comforts. Built on a Kerala theme, Coconut Lagoon resort is sure to give the Keralites a trip down the memory lane and reward you with a few nostalgic moments. If you are a first timer in Kerala, you will be find this completely fresh and exciting. The reception of the resort is a reconstruction of a nearly 200 year old traditional ‘Illom’ house, and follows the ‘Nalukettu’ design – featuring an open roof courtyard within the basic structure.
Accommodation at Coconut Lagoon
The accommodation at Coconut Lagoon consists of two styles: lakside pool villas and the splendid traditional cottages called tharavads, which are the traditional wooden houses of Kerala. The tharavads are ranged across the resort and consist of an upstairs bedroom and downstairs living room which attached external shower room.
The tharavads at the resort are wonderfully romantic with their raised traditional beds and bench surrounds. They are our favourite.
Set a few yards from the restaurant near the pool is the cocktail bar which is the resort of last hope for hot traveller seeking a sun downer or a little liquid refreshment before a hot curry. All the normal beers are available, but we tend to soak ourselves in a cocktail because that's just the way we roll.
Eating at Coconut Lagoon
It’s there in the best seller “The God of Small Things” and it’s been talked about in many international restaurant guides as well – the food at the old ‘etukettu’ styled restaurant at Coconut Lagoon. The menu features Kerala staples and even Ayurvedic drinks. The red rice, served at the restaurant is typical of Kerala and is organically grown which makes it just the kind of healthy meal you would want on a holiday. It can be combined with local classics and vegetarian dishes (banana chips, kottu, thoran ... the list goes on) Together, they make a perfect and wholesome meal. For visitors who need a break from local cooking, there is an array of "continental" dishes to choose as well. Children are also catered.
Some of the other facilities at the resort include swimming pool, channel music, smoke alarms and mini bar. You can visit the resort's Ayurvedic spa that offers rejuvenation packages and Ayurvedic massages.
You can keep cool by sitting at the lakeside and enjoying the afternoon breeze as it wafts off the water across the plantation. This is also the ideal time to waiti for the setting sun which weather permitting is always magical.
We also tend to find ourselves drawn towards the swimming pool hidden in the trees. Nothing beats the mid-day mad dog than a quick dip.
The guests can also make the best of their backwater holiday by taking up a houseboat cruise and set out on a journey of discovery and exploration.
Coconut Lagoon Reviews...
A Little bit of Paradise!
This hotel is set in the most idyllic surroundings. Our arrival by boat and land set the scene for a very memorable three days. The villas are beautifully spacious and private. Because of the backwaters you are continually crossing little bridges to get around the estate. The staff were extremely helpful and efficient. The facilities were A1 everything was spotless and they had a very good shop on site. They have a small nature reserve where we saw some wonderfully exotic butterflies and dragonflies. One evening we went out for a sunset cruise and we met plenty of kindred spirits there! This hotel was one of the highlights of our trip to Kerala. It's a must on your itinary ! Stayed February 2013
The parent company of this hotel set themselves a target of responsible tourism many years ago and have achieved it. Coconut Lagoon is a cluster of salvaged traditional Kerelan houses, renovated to an extremely high standard, grouped round backwater canals and the massive waterway system of Lake Vambanad. Amongst its green credentials, harvesting rainwater and with its own supply of gas manufactured from the food and garden wastes generated by its kitchens, rank as major achievements. The kitchens produce stunning gourmet dishes reflecting the very best of Kerelan cuisine adapted to match the tastes of its customers. The staff are personal, quiet, discreet and unendingly helpful, I love this place and have done for over 12 years. Nothing can describe the joy and peace of this quiet, entertaining and delicious little jewel in the crown of the CGHearth group of hotels. To the Dominic brothers and their families now continuing the good work, we owe a lot to your vision. Thank you Reviewed 25 February 2013
“Special hotel in great area”
We have been to this wonderful oasis over 5 times staying for about a week and love every moment. We adore listening to the many different birds, walking around the paddy field, watching the tuttles, butterflies and generally relaxing. The food is always of high standard and the staff welcome us as long lost friends. Our accommodation is clean and the outside bathroom such fun as showering with a bird or gecko watching is very much the norm. On a rare occasion a frog has joined us too. It is obvious that we love Coconut Lagoon and the staff do make it very special. Reviewed 17 February 2013
