Chenda

Chenda is a cylindrical percussion instrument used in the state of Kerala, India. It is also used in some parts of Karnataka.

Chenda is used in Kerala as an accompaniment in Hindu religious art forms such as Kathakali and Koodiyattam and and also in many forms of dances and rituals in Kerala.

A chenda is made out of a cylindrical wooden drum, and has a length of 2 feet and a diameter of 1 foot. Either end is covered with skin (usually cow skin). Only one side is struck by the artiste.

A Chenda is hung on the neck of the drummers neck in a vertical position. The drummer uses two thin sticks to beat on the parchment.
