One of the most happening places in Kerala thronged by tourists. A mere 16 kms away from the Trivandrum City, it figures prominently on the world tourism map. This crescent shaped beach has three parts- Lighthouse Beach, Hawa Beach and Samudra Beach. Lighthouse Beach, the most famous of them, houses a 35 metre high lighthouse and offers a view of the Vizhinjam mosque. Samudra beach is calm in comparison, and is the less preferred by the tourists. Kovalam beach is dotted with many ethnic and handicrafts shops where you can shop for trinkets, show pieces or woolen shawls with intricate designs. Needless to say, the prices are never fixed, even though the owners claim to be so. You can catch tourists bargaining on prices and clinching deals. Take a walk and you would find stalls that would fry the fresh catch from the sea right before your eyes. Being a hub of activities, Kovalam has many resorts and hotels to suit your budget.
