Kumarakom lagoon

The Kumarakom Lagoon is a lovely place in Vembanadu island for a relaxed getaway. It is a small property which can be accessed only by boat. Peaceful atmosphere, beautiful view and cushy ambiance is what you get here.Inspite of the availability of the best modern facilities, this island keeps you engaged with natural activities like walking along the village track, fishing, bird watching, or simply lazing around.

Being surrounded by water on all sides, all of its 14 rooms offer you an unrestricted view of the backwaters. You could go on fishing endlessly sitting on the banks of the backwaters. The visit to Kerala will always be incomplete without a backwater cruise on a houseboat converted from 'kettuvallam' - the traditional rice barge. The resort has facilities to give you the most unforgettable backwater trip of your life. The resort will provide you with the most ideal settings for Ayurveda, and the restaurant here, will present you with the best in Central Kerala cuisines. And for those interested in outdoor activities, the self maintained vegetable farm and the neighboring villages are added attractions.

Kumarakom offers a lot of scope for sightseeing such as :

Pathiramanal Bird Sanctuary: This 10 acre island on the backwaters is home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary : Located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, an ornithologist's paradise, is a favourite haunt of migratory birds like the Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal. Other common varieties like the woodpecker, skylark, crane, water hen and parrots can also be spotted here. A cruise along the Vembanad Lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary.

St Thomas Church : Situated at Cherthala in Alappuzha District, St. Thomas Church is an ancient place of worship. It is believed to have been built in the year 52 AD by Apostle St Thomas. This highly revered church contains an embellished altar containing the holy relics of the saintly figure. These relics were brought from Edessa, with the permission from His Holiness Late Pope John Paul II. The church observes an annual feast dedicated to St Thomas on the Sunday following Easter.

Mararikulam : The village of Mararikulam is tucked away behind a line of dense palms that rise like a sudden rampart of green out of the sands. Like all villages, it has evolved naturally, in picturesque disorder. The huts are slapdash adobe, thatched with-what else? -palm and tied with coir, or coconut rope.

Coconut oil mill: Watch how the oil is extracted from coconut flesh using a ‘Chuck’ (Traditional machine made from wood to extract oil).

Coir manufacturing unit : See village women making coir ropes from coconut fibre using a ‘charka’ (Spinning machine)
