Paravur is stated to have the largest natural backwater lakes (the Paravur Kayal) in South Asia. This in turn has given rise to a number of tourist resorts, with facilities for boating, swimming and surfing. This village is connected by rail route to Paravur railhead which is 3.5 Km away, while Kollam railhead is 20 Km from here. The nearest airport is Thiruvanathapuram International Airport which is about 65 Km away.
Sightseeing locations at Paravoor:
It is a fishing village with traditional coir making factories and coconut palm weaving centers. Paravoor has it's share of temples and churches.
Puthenkulam Elephant Village:
This is located around 5 kms away from Paravur on Paravur - Paripplay road. Paravur has roughly around 50 elephants in all. Every Year this place attracts a large number of tourists from all over the world, particularly during the months of November to March.
The whole property spans over 3.5 acres.The activities available includes elephant riding, trekking, elephant feeding and bathing. Elephant rides are available from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM every day. There is also a collection of elephant ornaments like gold plated caparisons, umbrellas, Alavattom, Venchamaram, Necklace etc .
