Trichambaram

Trichambaram

A sacred place of the Vaishnava cult, the deity of the temple is Sree Krishna. The sculptures on the walls of the sanctum sanctorium are in a class by themselves.

The annual temple festival, usually held in March, is a colourful event. The pratishta here was performed by Sambara Maharshi and hence the temple is known as Trichambaram. The presumption is that the temple is situated in Dwaraka. It is significant that all around the temple, the water level is high. There is an elinji tree just in front of the temple which bears no fruits but only flowers.

The annual festival at Trichambaram takes place during Kumbham- Meenam months (March). The temple vazhipadus like payasam and thousand breads are believed to bless the devotees with santhanavardhanavu.

At Mazhoor (Dharmakulangara) a place near Thrichambaram, there is a temple dedicated to Sree Blarama. On the 22nd night the idol of Blarama is taken out in procession and brought to the Thrichambaram temple. As soon as it reaches there, the festival begins. All other rituals are performed in the temple on an equal footing as Lord Krishna and Balaram are brothers. On the 6th of Meenam, the last day of the festival, the idols of Sree Krishna and Blarama are taken Ceremoniously in the evening. Lord Krishna retreats his abode, that is Thrichambaram temple, while this brother Balarama returns to Dharmakulangara temple, marking the end of the festival. A peculiar feature of this festival is that no elephant is taken in procession.
