Description of Brunton Boatyard:
It's hard to believe that the Brunton is a new building since it resembles the old colonial buildings of Cochin. The simple lime washed walls, sloping tile roof, terra-cotta floors, hand operated fans in the lobby and the giant Rain Tree in the courtyard completing the picture. The property is situated at the Harbour mouth overlooking the busy ship channel. All the rooms are sea facing with antique furniture It has high royal beds with steps with which to climb on to the beds. There is never a dull moment out there on briny deep for boats of every size and colour constantly ply the waters in front of the hotel not forgetting the mammoth Ocean liners which silently glide past just outside the window. The ppen terrace sea food restaurant facing the canal is the best for the evenings.
Brunton is a very comfortable, slightly chic hotel that is smaller than it feels. It has 26 rooms facing the sea and Cochin Harbour with a small pool beside the sea. All the rooms are smallish (except the suites) but very well decorated and the public areas, bars and restaurants are spacious and usually rather tranquil.
The restaurant called "History" is renowned for both its sea food and a romantic ambience.
Customer comments are uniformly positive with the occassional qualification that it seems a little sterile and cold:
"The Brunton Boatyard is a good hotel and located in a very interesting position as it overlooks the busy port entrance to Cochin. The rooms are characterful with their raised Raj style four poster beds and excellent facilities. However, overall the hotel lacks a little "soul". The restaurant is good and offers a wide selection of choice (handy for families). The breakfast is limited and there is no buffet which seemed surprising. Overall the hotel is good - but it just needs to "spice up" the atmtosphere a little!" (2006)
"The hotel is not cheap for sure, only Koder House is more expensve in Fort Cochin, and it seems to have a lot going for it. However it could do with more rooms, or at least more customers to give it a little more buzz about the place. With so few rooms it always seems to be a little empty and the large spaces dot help. On the other hand, if you are looking for a little quiet, this could be the one." (2007)
"Stayed at Brunton Boatyard for 2 days at the start of our holiday. Spacious, comfortable room and bathroom; friendly and helpful staff, The food is fabulous and the staff seemed more than happy to provide anything people wanted even if it isn't on the Brunton menu. Brunton has wonderful views over the entrance of the port. We don't normally stay in 5 star hotels, but felt completely at home!
