What is Abhyanga

The term abhyanga is used as a synonym of oil massage.It is beneficial for preserving youthfulness,alleviating vata troubles,for the comfort of the eyes,tonning up the body,sound sleep,softness and firmness of the sin,preventing skin diseases and for a long life.

What is the Abhyanga Procedure

Massages in abhyanga can be effectively done with two therapists working on eitherside of the patient, who lies on the treatment table.At first the therapist should apply the oil on the head of the patient.After warming the oil,should apply it on the face,cheeks,ears and the gentle massage is given. The patient reclines in seven standard positions in abhyanga are follows:

  • Sitting position
  • Lying on back
  • Lying on rightside
  • Lying on back
  • Lying on leftside
  • Lying on back
  • Sitting position

sometimes the position of lying facedown also adopted.The abhyanga that is the part of the daily routine lasts for five to fifteen minutes.But when it is performed for treating diseases it may take about 45 minutes.

All vata diseases like arthritis, sciatica,body ache..etc

Contraindications for Abhyanga

Oedematic condition ,during menstruation.
