[edit] Guide to Ayurveda

Ayurveda is the contribution of India to world health . A time old tradition , evidence based medicine- was not simply a stream of medicine but was the lifestyle of India.

With the advent of foreign rule , this time evolved medicine found a gradual decline in its glory. The science was not updated according to the developments of science. The treatments and principles remained as mere concepts and the therapies unscientific .In due course this life science happened to be remembered along with resorts .

Ayurveda is been popularised through health resorts in Kerala and elsewhere in the world it is a "massage" based therapy. But Ayurveda is not a resort based relaxation package, rather this great science is a holistic approach of wellness..

Here at Karma Kerala we take ayurveda very seriously. Our patient treatments are managed by our own in house doctor, Dr Chandana, and we work hard with you to help you achieve the life and medical outcomes you seek.

[edit] What Therapies Does Ayurveda Offer?

Using a holistic approach, Ayurveda offers therapies for each of the five senses because different people learn better through different senses. Therapies include;

  1. Taste: Herbs and nutrition.
  2. Touch: Massage (Abhyanga), Yoga, exercise.
  3. Smell: Aromatherapy.
  4. Sight: Color therapy.
  5. Hearing: Music therapy, mantra meditation, chanting. Spiritual therapies include meditation, living ethically, and working in a career that one loves or is purposeful.

Environmental factors are also considered from this holistic outlook. These therapies include house, apartment and office structure and astrological effects. These are sciences unto themselves. Vedic architecture (Vastu Shastra) and Chinese Feng Shui (pronounced fung shway) deal with the laws of nature that integrate the earth, the person and the planets and stars. The exterior and interior design of buildings can also enhance balance or cause imbalance. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) is the science of understanding the laws of nature of the planets and stars, and how they influence us.

Ayurveda recognises a range of illnesses and conditions which it seeks to heal

[edit] What Does Holistic Mean?

Holistic has two meanings.

1)It looks at the whole of one's life. Health and disease are byproducts of all aspects of one's life: nutrition, career, mental frame, family and social activities and spiritual life. If one area is weakened, all areas begin to suffer. If a person is unhappy at work, it will affect all other areas of life.

2)Holistic means holy. Ayurveda reminds us that to have and maintain true health, one needs to take some quiet time for spiritual development. The goal of life is Self-Realization. This is a state of unshakable Divine mental peace.

[edit] Charaka – The Authority On Ayurveda

No perfect record is traceable as to when Charaka was lived, but his Samhita (system) is ever-living. A reasonable belief is that he was lived in Kusana period – a period existed many centuries ago, probably 1st century AD. It is widely believed that he was a physician–companion of Kaniska who lived in the period of Charaka. Anyway, Charaka, is immortal and his contributions to mankind and ayurveda are priceless.

He has very minutely decimated the structure of human body, discovered the cause of ailments and invented the remedy for born. For unborn, his contribution started from the formation of fetus to delivery with interception of techniques for formation of pre-determined sex.

His Samhita evidences that he lived in north-west part of India after the Buddhist period is over, spending most of the time in Himalaya which he craze-loved.

Charaka Samhita text was revived by Drdhabala in 4th century. The Samhita is a treasure for students and teachers of ayurveda, pharmacologists, philosophers, physicians, science historians and even layman.

To benefit the mankind, Charaka Samhita was translated into many languages including Tibetan and Arabic. The importance and relevance of the Samhita sky-fly as the years roll by. In recent past, in late 20th century to be precise, authentic treaties on Charaka have descended in Europe and Japan.
