The ramparts of the fort are very dear to movie makers They shoot the films from here. Tipu Sultan used the fort as military base before losing it to East India Company. Locals say there are hidden passages for armies and royal lovers. The tall thick walls once kept invaders at bay.It is one of the largest fortresses in Kerala and would offer panoramic bay views.
A Magazine is on the grassy knolls of the fort. The steps lead to an Observation Tower and some picturesque peepholes. An ancient Anjaneya Temple, a mosque, a crowd-puller sea bastion and underground passages moor the visitors with curiosity.
[edit] Bekal Fort Beach
A shallow beach near the Bekal Fort the Bekal beach is a great place for leisure. The beach is vast expanse of white sand spread across vast landscape. the laterite ramparts offer panoramic views of the gloriously empty beaches stretching away on both sides. The trees along the coast gives its an exotic look. Bekal Beach has two sculptures of Theyyam created using laterite, a shed is also there with walls having murals created by artisans from Nilambur. The sunset and sunrise view here is a splendid experience. Swimming is safe.
The picturesque surrounding here make it ideal for a visit, one can explore the beautiful sceneries around it and get a panoramic view of the Bekal Fort. The beach also provides a water park for kids and is a huge attraction of the beach. Along with all this parking space is also there for vehicles. To the south, the Valiyaparamba backwaters comprise a tangle of largely uninhabited creeks, islets and winding rivers served by a handful of houseboats.
