[edit] Brahmins

Brahmins | Kshatriya | Shudr | Vaisya

The ancient Hindu society of India was based on a caste system which dependant on various factors, one among them being occupation. But in the course of time castes became hereditary. It is not possible to change ones caste.

The Brahmins occupy the highest rung in this social order. In earlier times a Brahmin was an individual well versed in the Vedas (the scriptural texts of Hinduism). This in turn resulted in making the Brahmin class the scholars and priests. Today however, Brahmins are employed in a variety of occupations unrelated to their priestly duties.

Vedic Brahmins arrived in Kerala only in 700-800 AD, along the west coast. Maurya Sharman, a Kadamba King, invited large colonies of Brahmins from North India to settle in Kerala. In 792 AD, King Udaya Varman of Mooshika dynasty settled 237 Brahmin families in Kerala
