Chakiyar Koothu

Chakiar Koothu is a highly stylized classical dance form in Kerala.

It is believed that early Aryan immigrants brought it to Kerala.

Chakiar Koothu is performed only by the members of Chakiar caste.

It was performed on a specially constructed theater is known as koothambalam. It used to be staged only inside the temples.

The facial expressions and hand gestures give life to the dance.

The only accompaniments are cymbals and mizhavu,(special drum) made of copper with a narrow mouth which is covered with a piece of tightly stretched parchment.
