Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD)
DME is mostly a male disease. It is caused due to genetically cross-linked degenerative disorder of muscle tissues. The victims of DMD are children and the death usually occurs before the age of 20. This genetic defect is due to the lack of a muscle protein called dystrophin. Though DMD is an inherited disease, it is also caused by spontaneous mutation in about 25% cases.
The eruption of DMD is in stages as follows:
1 beginning of muscle weakness. This happens usually before the age of 4.
2 Selective muscle involvement of pelvic and pectoral girdles.
3 Hypertrophy of the calves muscles.
4 Grossly elevated serum CPK level.
5 Progressive weakness of muscle leading to contractures and thoria deformity.
The deformity takes place within 10 years of beginning muscle weakness.
Panchakarma massage and Mamsagni Rasayana with Gold bhasma reduce serum CPK level. It decreases muscle damage and increases production of muscle CPK enzyme leading to longer survival. As there is no cure in any system of medicine, ayurveda treatment will help longer the life.
