Edakkal
Edakkal is located in Wayanad district of Kerala. It is famous for the pre-historic Edakkal Caves which are believed to have been formed around 8000 BC. The word ‘Edakkal’ means a stone in between. According to popular legends associated with Edakkal, the caves were formed at the point struck by the arrows fired by Lava and Kusha, the twin sons of Lord Rama.
The caves are on the Ambukuthi Mala at a height of 1000 meters. The big boulders are balanced on two relatively smaller boulders.
The caves are 1 Km from Edakkal; the carvings on the caves are fascinating and said to be 4000 years old, and displays pictures of ancient tribal chieftains, queens, elephants and tools. These caves also boast scripts from the 3rd- 4th century BC which are still in good shape. The place attracts many historians and archaeologist from around the world.
The mountains are ideal for trekking. The caves are a popular tourist attraction. The town is easily accessible.
