Emesis
Empty stomach is a pre-condition for emesis. The patient should have bathed and worshipped to gods, fire, parents, elders, Brahmins and physician. Lubrication; and fomentation precede the emesis therapy. During this procedure if any adverse reaction (physical or mental) is noticed it should be stopped. The procedure should be re-started only after setting right the adverse effect.
After the successful procedure of lubrication and fomentation, an extract of madanaphala mixed with rock salt, jaggery, madhuka and honey is given. The dosage is guided by the degree of accumulation of doshas which a learned physician can understand. After the drug is given the patient is closely observed. If sweating erupts, it is the indication of accumulated doshas liquefying. The eruption of goose-flesh is the sign of the movement of accumulated doshas and the consequent vomiting. At this point of time the patient should be allowed to sit on a cot in knee-height with sheets and pillow, and a spittoon aside.
The inspection of vomit in the spittoon gives clue as to the effect of the treatment. If the vomiting is poor or the vomit is of only the drugs consumed it signals that the treatment has not been effective.
A whole day after the treatment the patient should take full rest in all senses. For this he or she should lie down quietly.
