A Traditional Dance Form

Kaikottikali , or thiruvathirakali, one of the most famous group-dance of the women of Kerala to mark the festival seasons Onam. This form of dance has generally eight to ten women dancing in a symmetrical form with rhythm.

The women wear traditional attire while performing the dance and its a simple and dance with elegance and coordination an essential element. The dance is performed on the Thiruvathira songs.

In this one performer sings the first line of the song while the rest repeat it in chorus with clapping their hands in unison. They move in circular motion, clockwise and at times anticlockwise, with every step all performers bend sideways, with theirs arms coming together in graceful gestures, upwards and downwards and to either side, in order to clap.
