Kothamangalam is a small town lying at the foothills of the Western Ghats and is known as The Gateway to the High ranges( Idukki).

The history of Kothamangalam tells us that it was at one time ruled by the Cheras. Thrikkariyoor (Karur) a village 3 Km from Kothamangalam was the capital of Cheras.
