Kumarakom
Kumarakom is a village situated on the Vembanad Lake in Kerala one of the most beautiful island. Kumarakom boasts a variety of attractions the mangroves forest, emerald green paddy fields, coconut groves and backwaters all makes it a dream place. Situated on the Vemabanad lake the largest backwater of Kerala, Kumarakom is a quaint little hamlet of tiny islands about 85 kilometers from Cochin International Airport.
Kumarakom has fertile soil due to the proximity of the water source, this has resulted in the growth of a wide variety of flora in this region. It also has vast resource of marine species especially the 'Karimeen' (Peral spotted fish), Shrimp and Prawn (chemmeen).
The bird sanctuary here has some great variety of birds even the rarest species of birds can be seen here, it extends over 14 acres, and came into existence following preservation efforts from the government.
The best way to explore this beautiful place is go the traditional way, take the 'Kettuvallam' (house boats) which will take you into the heart of the scenic lake. It is connected by road all nearby places in Kerala.
The nearest rail head is Kottayam which 13 Km away and nearest airport is Cochin International Airport.
