[edit] Periyar Tiger Reserve
Periyar Tiger Reserve is situated in the Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala State in South India. Covering an area of 777 Sq .km., Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India.
The Periyar and Pamba rivers form the important drainage of this area. It has great scenic charm and a rich biodiversity. It is located at altitudes between 900m and 1800m and the average temperatures vary from 15 to 30 degree celcius.
It was declared a Project Tiger Reserve in 1978 . Seventy percent of the protected area is covered with evergreen and semi evergreen forest.
Periyar is probably one of the few places, where one can observe the elephants in their native surroundings.
A people oriented and park centered community based ecotourism is the hallmark of Periyar Tiger Reserve.
The Periyar lake was formed by the construction of the dam across the Mullaperiyar river in 1895. Boating on the lake within the sanctuary,offers the best opportunity to see wildlife at close quarters. Gaur, deer, wild boar and the distinctive Nilgiri langur are often spotted along the lake besides water birds.
Hiking in the presence of a local guide is yet another way to explore the park. However, avoid the period immediately after the monsoons when leeches make hiking impossible.
The ideal time to visit is between the months of December and May when the dry waether draws animals from the forests to drink at the lakeside.
The entrance fee for foreigners is Rs.150 and Rs.50 on subsequent days. If you are staying insiude the park you must buy a new pass for each day you stay from the entrance gate.
