Floral Art

Pokkalam a traditional flower art form of Kerala, in which flowers are arranged in a colourful way in front of the houses as a essential and integral part of the ten day long Onam festival.

'Pookhalam' basically consists of two words, 'poov' meaning flower and 'kalam' means colour sketches on the ground. This floral art can be seen beautifully laid by women and girls in front of their houses to give their house a colourful touch. Pokkalam is also known as 'Aththa-Poo'.

Meanwhile Pookalam is said to be the symbol of welcome to their beloved King Mahabali during his visits to Kerala at the time of Onam.
