Rakthamoksha (Blood Purification)

Rakthamoksha is done as a therapeutic remedy in many diseases.

Samanachikilsa and Sodhanachikilsa are the two means by which diseases are controlled or cured in Ayurveda.

Samanachikilsa is indicated for the mild and medium range cases, whereas Sodhanachikilsa is indicated for deep rooted and profound cases.

Samanachikils is highly advisable for unhealthy patients who may have been weakened by their ailment.

Sodhanachikilsa is aimed at total eradication by eliminating the root cause and administered to healthy patients only.

The therapeutic value of Rakthamoksha is tremendous. Rakthamoksha is done when the vitiated cause is blood-related. It is done only when the d rug therapy proves ineffective.

There are two types of Rakthamoksha. For one type sharp instruments called Shastravisravana is employed, whereas for the second type blunt instruments or leeches are employed. This type is called Anusasthravisravana.

In Anusastravisravana, leeching helps remove the vitiated blood. In this the leech placed on the affected spot suck the vitiated blood. As an alternative a suction apparatus is employed for which the affected spot is punctured where the apparatus is fitted and it sucks out the vitiated blood. It is called Alabuavacharana. Sringa is another instrument in lieu of Alabu employed.

Khadvacharana, using a vcuumised earthern pot, is yet another method which is more or less similar to Alabuavacharana.

Rakthamoksha is generally done for the people within the age group of 12 to 50 and the periodicity is determined according to the health conditions and vitiation rate of the blood.

Jalaukavacharana (blood suction by leech). This method is very safe to employ even in the cases after plastic surgery, ophthalmic surgery or cardiac surgery. The patient feels no irritation, no pain, no itching etc.

Both male and female leeches are used. Males are more acceptable as they drink more blood.

Rakthamoksha is done in certain cases of complaints in joints and some cases of skin ailments.

Selection of Leech, Preparation of Patient & Application : Selected healthy and freely moving leech and put it in a pot or t ray containing turmeric power mixed water. Turmeric powder is mixed in order to activate the leech.

TT injection to the patient prior to the application is advisable but not compulsory. Clean the affected area with hot water. Place the leech on the affected spot and mildly hold it with cotton till it starts drinking. If hesitate to suck, place a drop of milk or ghee on the affected spot.

The leech detaches on its own after drinking the impure blood. If not detached, place a pitch of turmeric powder on its head when it will detach quickly. If itching or pain is felt to the patient, it is the indication of having removed all the impure blood.

It is advisable to clean and bandage the bite mark to avoid contact with infection.
