Shudras
Brahmins | Kshatriya | Shudr | Vaisya The Shudras occupy the bottom rung of the ladder in the traditional four-section division of the caste system that was widely prevalent in Indian society.
A shudra did not have any rights or privileges. A Shudra could not perform any sacrifices, learn to read or study the Vedas. He could not marry outside his caste. Entry into temples was forbidden to him. He had to serve the upper three castes.
Shudras are traditionally artisans and laborers. Those who belonged to this caste were the barber, blacksmith, cobbler, shoemaker, sweeper, scavenger communities and the slaves.
The Government of India has since Independence, attempted to bring these underprivileged people into the national mainstream through job reservation and special development programmes
