Thanneermukkom Bund

The Thanneermukkom Regulator and Thottapally spillway are two major structures across the Vembanad Lake in Alappuzha. They were constructed with the intention to increase rice production.

Traditionally only one crop of paddy could be cultivated in the paddy fields of Kuttanad. Lying below sea level the fields were flooded during the rainy season. During summer the salinity of the water would increase as water from the sea came in.

Accordingly the Thottappally spillway was designed to divert the flood water in monsoon and Thanneermukkom Regulator/bund was built to check the advancing salinity in summer.
