Vascular problems and Heart Disease

Dr. P. R. Jayathilakan at Triprayar town in Thrissur district provides treatment for heart disease.
Dr P R Jayathilakan, 65, a retired senior medical officer of Government of Kerala is the senior most of Pokkanchery Ayurveda Physicians family, with a tradition of over 700 years in Ayurveda treatment.
The full course of treatment is for 90 days in chronic cases. 60% cure in the first course of 17 days for acute cases. The medicines are formulated by him and supplied directly to the patients. Medicines
The main ingredients of Ayurvedic products are taken from the herbs. Experts in Dravya Guna-plant identification-examine each batch of harvested herbs. It takes great attention and expertise to correctly identify herbs. Each batch of herbs is then sorted for quality. Traditional methods of extraction and processing are followed. Extracts are processed using steam distillation, never with alcohol or benzene. Different ingredients or components are added to a formulation at the specific times and temperatures detailed in the texts to maintain the integrity and authenticity of the final formulation.

Sudarshanam Netra Chikitsalayam is well known for treating disorders of the eye through Ayurveda. The centre was founded in 1990 under the auspices of Paramacharya of Kanchi Kama Koti Peedom Shri Shri. Chandra Sekhara Saraswathi Swamigal of Kancheepuram. Netra Chikitsa or Ophthalmology, a specialty area in Ayurveda, has to date very few practitioners compared to other Ayurveda specialties.
Dr.B.G.Gokullan
Dr.B.G.Gokullan is the Medical Director of Sudarshanam Netra Chikitsalayam. An 'Ayurvedacharya' (BAMS) from Coimbatore Ayurveda College in the ancient Gurukula standards, he has attended various national and international conferences on Ayurveda and traditional medicine by presenting papers on Ayurvedic Ophthalmic medicine. In 1997 the first of it's kind eye camp in Ayurveda was conducted at Jaipur in Rajasthan for a period of 4 weeks where Dr.Gokullan treated more than 1200 patients and was rewarded at a function graced by the presence of Shri. Bali Ram Bhagat, then governor of Rajasthan.
The first Ayurvedic graduate to receive the prestigious life fellowship of " Ashoka Innovators" for the public from United states in 1993 for the kind of innovative work he has done for the promotion of Ayurvedic Ophthalmology. In 1999, he received the prestigious fellowship for promotion of deprived children in the world - CRY (Child Relief & You, based at Chennai in Tamilnadu).
Dr.B.G.Gokullan won the zone Kamalpatra Award for outstanding career development instituted by Indian Junior Chamber for the year 1999. He has appeared in many National & international Television channels including Discovery channel. He participated in making the first feature film on Ayurveda "Ayurveda ~ the art of being" that had a world wide release. This film was previewed at IFF, Mumbai.
He has received extensive training in traditional Ophthalmology from Netra Vaidya Sri N.V.Kutty Krishnan Nair. He was also trained at Sankara Netralaya, Chennai (a well known modern Ophthalmic institute in Asia), in modern diagnostic methods. He received a prestigious fellowship from United States of America named "Ashoka Innovators for the Public" (FAIP) in 1994.
Treatment at Sudarshanam Netra Chikitsalayam
There are various methods of applications for the medicines to act upon the eye and the body. The major among them are Kashayadhara, Nasya, Tarpana, Putapaka, Pichu, Shashtika sweda, Talam, Shirodhara, Shirovasti and Yakrut seva.
- Kashayadhara
Measured dropping of herbal decoction added with honey to the eyes from a specific height for a specific period is called Kashayadhara.
- Nasya
Instilling medicated oil by drops into both nostrill is known as Nasya.
- Pichu
Placing cotton or cotton cloth soaked in medicated oil over the centre of head (Bregma) for a specific period is called Pichu.
- Shashtika sweda
Massaging with a poultice made with herbal milk decoction paste over the closed eyes for a prescribed time and under controlled pressure is called Shashtika sweda.
- Shirovasti
This is one of the major therapies in Ayurveda, carried out in cases of Neurological eye disorders, Head ache, Thyroid dysfunction and many other problems related with pituitary gland.

Sudarshanam Netra Chikitsalayam, is housed in a traditional building which can accommodate up to 4 families or 10 patients and can treat up to 20 patients at a time.
