[edit] Trivandrum

Trivandrum also known as Thiruvanathapuram is the capital of Kerala. It was the capital of the Travancore kingdom which was established in 1759. The name is derived from ‘Tiru Ananta Puram’ the abode of the scared serpent Ananta, on whose coil Lord Vishnu lies in the main temple. The Kings called themselves Padmanabha Dasa (servant of lord Vishnu). It is the capital city of modern day Kerala.

Palayam Square in the heart of the city with its mosque, temple and church speaks volumes about the religious tolerance adopted by the erstwhile rulers of this city.

Thiruvanathapuram houses historic monuments, traditional art, culture, temples and churches. The busy Mahatma Gandhi Road still retains colonial structures and churches which bear mute witness to the historical legacy of the city.

The city has grown into a commercial and tourist centre . The Trivandrum International Airport is situated 6 Km from the city. The Trivamdrum rail route connects it to all major towns in Kerala and other main cities in India. The road transport links Trivandrum to all the towns and cities.

Some of the landmarks in the city are the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple, East fort, Kerala University, Trivandrum Central and the zoo and museum to name only a few.
