Willington Island
Willington Island, a man made island lies between Ernakulam and Mattancherry. It was created by using the dredged soil while deepening the Kochi harbour to allow vessels with deeper draughts to dock.
It was named after the former Viceroy of India, Lord Willington.
Surrounded by the backwaters the island has its own appeal.
Although a small island it is a hub of a lot of activity. The shipbuilding yard, wharf, southern Naval Command Head Quarters and the Customs house all are located here.
The Taj Malabar which is the oldest 5 star hotel in Kerala is located on this island. This island was also witness to the humble beginnings of the cgh earth group which is now one of the biggest privately owned hotel chains in Kerala.
