A special procession performed as part of temple festivals in Kerala.
Ezhunullathu is the grand procession conducted on the occasion of temple festivals in Kerala.
Certain religious rituals are performed before the Ezhunnallathu begins.The deity is placed on top of a richly caparisoned elephant . There may be more than one elephant in the procession.
Sometimes a priest holding a lighted lamp might lead the procession. A chenda melam(percussion band, local drums are called chendas will indicate that the deity is coming in procession.Crackers are burst at intervals to add to the pomp and noise.
“Ezhunallathu” is also conducted to give a grand welcome to visiting heads of state, VIPs or other dignitaries.
