Thekkady lies in Idukki district in Kerala, South India. The Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady, Periyar is one of the 27 tiger reserves in India. It is 190 km from Cochin and 114 kms away from Kottayam.
It remains open throughout the year. The ideal season is from September to March. The sanctuary is centered around an artificial lake formed by a dam across the Periyar river. A boat trip over this man-made lake is a popular activity. The forest department also arranges elephant rides and trekking inside the sanctuary.
