Karma Kettuvalam Eco Houseboat
No engine in this green paddled traditional Kerala houseboat
Perhaps the most peaceful houseboat in Kerala and cruising its own grounds from Cherthala. With no engine you move at the speed of the punts that propel you quietly along the small canals in this unexplored corner of backwaters. Eco friendly and tranquil - KarmaKettuvallam is a traditional slice of Kerala!
The traditional Kettuvalam or backwater houseboats use to slowly work their way across the backwaters to the rice ports of Alappuzha and Cochin to tranship their rice for export. Today, most houseboats simply chug along with either noisy outboard engines or large diesels that throb throughout the boat. Our Eco-KarmaKettuvalams eschew the internal combustion engine for the tides and the brawn of our crew who push and punt you along these narrow, traditional canals in Cherthala District which sits between Cochin and Alappuzha off Lake Vembanad.
The houseboat is small traditional size with a single romantic cabin at the stern. Without engines and generators we don't offer such fancy mod cons but we do offer the gentle swish of a fan overhead and the breezes from the backwaters. During the day we charge our batteries using solar panels so not only will the sun tan you, it will provide for our evening light and fans.
We serve traditional Kerala meals of fish and vegetable curries, local Kerala rice and of course poppadoms. Refreshments are light drinks, bottled water and our delicious local coconut water which offers myriad health benefits and are fresh from the trees.
Our single cabin has an ensuite shower room with cold/lukewarm water. Like all Keralites we spurn the luxury of boiling hot water to prefer the refreshing zing of a cool shower in the morning, evening or whenever the desire for a cool down grabs your fancy.
