Kollam to Alappuzha Backwater Cruise
The Whole Backwater Experience
This is the big one taking in some of the most unexplored backwaters! Starts in Kollam and cruises all the way to Alappuzha or Kumarakom! (Can be reversed)
This is one of our most requested cruises which takes you from A to B rather than simply doing a circuit!
The cruise can be south to North or the other way so suits any requirement. There is very limited availability for these cruises as logistics is complicated so early booking is a must so that everything can be arranged. This is a good way to both travel from the south towards Cochin and enjoy the classic houseboat cruise at the same time.
Generally we run this with superior houseboats with AC and all food included rather than deluxe which are difficult to book. The boats have ensuite cabins, day cabin in bows with day bed and are traditional houseboat/Kettuvalom style.
Standard size for us is two cabin (sleeps 4), but subject to availability, we can get a bigger boat.
Itinerary Based on Kollam to Alappuzha
We kick off from North of Kollam on the five fingered Ashtamudi Lake which is the southerly end of the backwaters. After cruising the lake we start along the traditional Kollam Alappuzha waterway which follows the coast north passing the coastal and inland towns as it travels north. This is the old waterway that was used the ship rice and goods north to south in the old days.
From Ashtamudi we follow the coast travelling below the highway following the coast. At times only a sand dune separates us from the Arabian Ocean. The canal widens into "kayals" at times before continuing north as we putter along. We pass across rivers coming down from the distant mountains and you will find a lot to see as you get a chance to view the waterside life. North of the Pampa River, the waterway turns away from the sea and travels inland towards the rice paddies south of Alappuzha.
