Alappuzha is the gateway to the Kerala backwaters with its extraordinary ecosystem of narrow canals and huge rice paddies, all beneath sea level and fed by both the tidal sea currents and the fresh water dropping down from the misty ghat mountains inland. Alappuzha has been called the Venice of the East because of the network of small canals that weave through the city carrying the waters to the sea. In recent years the city has been renovating the canals again so that the water runs through the city again clearly. Alappuzha is also the starting point for many kerala houseboat journeys which leave from one of the many boat jetties.
Alappuzha's position between sea and backwater means that there is a very diverse range of properties available for you from beach resorts such as Marari Beach Resort or Pollethai to the more intimate beachside homes such as Motty's or Marari beach Homes
Alappuzha sits on the Western edge of Lake Vembanad opposite to Kumarakom and Kottayam with its lakeside resorts such as Coconut Lagoon and Kumarakom Lake Resort.
Between the two lies the lake which is one of the largest in Asia and stretches all the way from Fort Cochin to the North.
