In the south there is the venerable old Kovalam beaches that were once haunt to hippies but were then "spoilt" by the arrival of vanilla hotels infilling. The death of package flights has led to some resuscitation but there is a long way to go before charm is restored. Further along Varkala is now standard bearer for hippy communes on beach side gurus. It is all a little tatty, but turn your back at dusk and watch the sun and it is all worth it. Marari was nothing 15 years ago but CGH Earths Marari Beach Resort has made it the most popular beach south and in reach of Cochin. There are a number of smaller properties, but issues between local unions and hoteliers have sometimes proved problematic!

Travel along the coast north from Cochin and the first beach you hit is Cherai which can be a little hit and miss, but new hotels like Les Trois Elephants promise a more stylish future.

Far, far to the North are the beaches of Kannur province. Mostly unvisited and like the beaches of old days. Not quite Sri Lanka, but getting there!
