Houseboats are converted rice-barges or country boats used in the early days for the transport of goods from the isolated interior villages to the towns. Known as 'Kettuvalloms' in local parlance, they are back as a major tourist attraction. These thatch-roofed mobile accommodation gives you an opportunity to grab the experience called 'Kerala'. Reclining on cushions and drifting through quiet canals, you pass through paddy fields grazed by ducks, floating markets, local toddy shops, temples and churches. It will take you along the lake, backwaters, meadows, coconut groves and villages. If it catches your fancy, step down and walk around the village to feel the pulse of the rural Kerala life. The boat will be anchored at the lake side for the night stay.
You will have a captain, oars man and a cook with you on the boat. Ask the captain for fishing rods and if lucky, you will be rewarded with a catch which the cook will dish out at the dinner table. The cruise starts at 12:00 noon with lunch and ends by morning 09:30 after breakfast.
