Koothambalam

Koothambalam is the special theater for staging koothu ,a dramatic art form famous in Kerala, South India.

All Koothambalams are situated inside the temples in Kerala.

A koothambalam is considered be as sacred as the temple.

Only men from the Chakyar community are permitted to perform Koodiyattam in these special theaters.

The Mizhavu or drum used in these performances is kept inside the Koothambalams.

Koothu is still performed at the famous koothambalams in the Vadakkunnathan temple in Thrissur and in the Irinjalakkuda temple.
