Manavikram Chira

A chira is a pond or tank. It could be man made or natural. In earlier times a chira would be constructed at the edge of the fields so that the workers returning from their work in the fields could wash themselves.

The Manavikram chira was in the main courtyard of the palace of the erstwhile Zamorin rulers of Calicut. It was alarge pond situated there. It was constructed by the zamorins to cater to the needs of the people.

Today the place where the pond stood and the all the structures that were nearby are in Mananchira Square in the heart of the city and important institutions like the Town Hall and the Public Library and the Commonwealth Trust's office are located here.

The large pond and park are well-known landmarks
