Moreover, Kumarkom Lagoon being located close to the bird sanctuary, enables a walk into the forest with the sightings of a variety of birds, insects, reptiles, Indian cormorants, Kingfishers, tree frogs, green frogs, butterflies, damselflies, tree lizards and more! The resort has a 12-acre coconut tree filled land cris-crossed by narrow canals surrounds the property. During the daytime you could spent time in the vegetable farm, and walk by the village track in the evenings . Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary : Located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, an ornithologist's paradise, is a favourite haunt of migratory birds like the Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal. Other common varieties like the woodpecker, skylark, crane, water hen and parrots can also be spotted here. A cruise along the Vembanad Lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary. St Thomas Church : Situated at Cherthala in Alappuzha District, St. Thomas Church is an ancient place of worship. It is believed to have been built in the year 52 AD by Apostle St Thomas. This highly revered church contains an embellished altar containing the holy relics of the saintly figure. These relics were brought from Edessa, with the permission from His Holiness Late Pope John Paul II. The church observes an annual feast dedicated to St Thomas on the Sunday following Easter. Mararikulam : The village of Mararikulam is tucked away behind a line of dense palms that rise like a sudden rampart of green out of the sands. Like all villages, it has evolved naturally, in picturesque disorder. The huts are slapdash adobe, thatched with-what else? -palm and tied with coir, or coconut rope. Coconut oil mill: Watch how the oil is extracted from coconut flesh using a ‘Chuck’ (Traditional machine made from wood to extract oil).
