Mavelikkara

Mavelikkara

Mavelikkara is a small town, located 25 km from Ambalapuzha. The famous Chettikulangara Bhagawathi temple is located here. The Bhagawathi here known as Jagadambika and Bhadrakali possesses high rated miraculous powers.

Large number of devotees converges here and the income of the temple is very big. The temple structure is very spacious and built in Kerala architecture style. A multi-tiered Kalluvilakku (stone lamp) with provision for 1001 wicks here is the largest temple lamp in India. In the outer courtyard there are few more shrines for sub-deities. The pilgrims very devoutly worship a snake grove, a black palm tree and a champakam tree located in the precincts. There is a strong belief that Yakshi (a female spirit) visits the area where these trees are located.

Kettukazhcha in Kumbam (February/March) is the main festival. During this festival, Kuthiyottam, a symbolic remnant of the ancient practice of human sacrifice is enacted. Preceding the main festival there is 41-day festival in the month of Makaram (January/February).
