What Onam without ona paattukal(onam songs)?

Music has the magic to pierce the hearts and minds of all human beings. Whatever is the celebration we have music to enrich the gala mood. This year too the music lovers had their thirst quenched with the Onam songs in their ears.

Before the season was on the music directors, play back singers and the music studios started preparing a variety of music dishes to offer to the world and when the season was on, the music industry was all set to enlighten the hearts of all malayalees not only in Kerala but also those staying outside the state or even the country.

When the beautiful girls of Kerala wear their traditional costumes, ‘setum mundum’ and sing different songs like ‘maaveli naadu vaaneedum kaalam maanusharellaarum onnu pole….’ (When our great King Mahabali ruled this country all the men were treated as equals), all the listeners especially the old would have many Onams flash through their minds.  The music has the nostalgic tint in it to keep us mesmerised for long, throughout the festive season or even after that.

The rhythm of the Onam songs give us a grand treat to cherish along with all the other delicacies offered by Onam.

The magic of Music

Yes, the world of music has a magic in it to make you feel good when you are down and also to dance when you are happy. It has the power to bring solace to a disturbed mind. After a hectic day when you listen to a melodious song even in a shop you will feel at peace.
That’s what happened to me when I went to an internet cafe in Kochi. I was rushing through the busy street and finally reached the third floor of a building where there was an accredited internet cafe. I had to take a print out.

As the streets became darker I was hurrying to finish up at the cafe to get to my hostel room as early as possible. As when I squeezed myself into that small cupboard like space I suddenly heard the tunes of a melodious song from the movie ‘Kaanakanmani’, ‘Muthe Muthe. The movie starring Jayaram, one of the renowned actors of  Kerala’s film Industry, and Padmapriya.

The song is very much like a lullaby and actually soothes you and makes you feel pampered by your mother. The lyrics mean ‘you are the apple of my eye and I will be always your cradle for you to sleep.. baby’ and so on. The music is simple but heart-felt. The lullaby sung by Sujatha has a beautiful melody. The versatility of the singer is greatly captured in that single song. Sweet voice of the popular playback singer and the melodious music were successful in taking my mind away. I forgot to  browse the net for those 4-5  minutes. Some say Kerala’s film songs have degraded, but this song contradicts this popular thought. The melodious songs of Kerala are still alive and continue to be powerful enough to bring solace to us Malayalis.

After the song I finished my work and came out so refreshed that I didn’t even think of taking an auto-rickshaw and walked all the way to hostel humming the song. That’s the magic of music and Malayalam film songs continues to make ripples in our minds!
