The directive that elephants should not be used for processions and rituals between 11 am and 3pm to minimise the hardships to these gentle giants is praise worthy. Temple authorities in Kerala are arriving at innovative ideas to find a majestic replacement for jumbos for temple processions that fall mostly during the scorching summer months of March – May. A temple in Cherthala has shown the way by using an exquisitely ornate Palanquin made in teak at a cost of over two lakh rupees for its temple processions. |

There are no two opinions that smoking is injurious to health and the health concious State of Kerala fully endorsed this fact by banning smoking in public. However, what is intriguing is the gaping loopholes in this law. While there is no prohibition on the sale of cigarettes, the shop keepers are not allowed to sell match box or lighter to the customers! So the smoking chimneys have no other way than to carry a match box always in their pockets or chuck out this deadly addiction out of frustration. Strange indeed are the ways adopted by the administration to curb the smoking habit of its populace.
