Kerala Celebrated its 52nd day of Constitution on Novemeber1, 2008. Referred to as Kerala Day, Malayalees celebrate this day with lot of fond memories.  To keep pace with the spirit of the day, most of the Malayalees were seen in traditional attire - men in mundu and women in Kerala sari. The schools also joined the banwagaon by conducting competitions and contests with respect to Kerala Day.

Onam and floral carpets are two sides of the same coin. Mostly, flowers that are commonly seen in the backyards such as ‘Thumba’ (Leuca Indica), an indigenous plant of Kerala bearing small bell shaped white flowers are predominantly used for making floral carpets on Onam day. Children trek long distances and forage the greenery to pick up the shoots of these plants. Interestingly another plant, Tragia Involucrata, also is known as ‘thumba’ in some parts of Kerala. Its leaves can cause severe itching when anyone comes in contact with. The city bred kids had a nasty brush with this variety of plant all because of mistaken identity and had to spend the whole day of Onam itching and scratching.

This is about something even better! It is a real life story of a girl and her pet goat, Ammu who accompanies her to her school daily. The goat would wait outside the school gate till the classes are over and it goes back home with its little owner. This has been going on for many months now and this lamb with icy white coat and dark blue eyes has become an overnight celebrity in this village.
