The Discount Festival - The festival of Onam has moved on to become a 'Festival of Discounts' in the 21st Century. From 'Payasam' (a traditional sweet dish) and 'Pookalam' (floral carpets of intricate designs created with petals), Onam has turned more commercial. It not  only coincides with the harvest season, but it is also that time of the year when the employed class get their bonus package. The shopkeepers are cashing on the festive spirit in the air and are all set to lure the customers with reduced rates on the goods. Unlimited and discount packages offerings in huge and brightly painted fonts in front of exclusive and petty shops are tempting enough for the customers. Add to it, the sudden rise in bank balance of the customers. It sure is a tough call to resist.

It is the only one of its kind in the whole city of Kochi. It was featured in well acclaimed Hollywood films like Cotton Mary and even well heeled buyers from overseas vied for this hot possession. Well, we are not talking about any drop dead gorgeous car model in the super luxury segment. The protagonist of this snippet is a three wheeled cycle rickshaw, which plies in Amaravati in Fort Kochi to transport school going kids. Though cycle rickshaws are still popular means of transport in other parts of India, Keralites have long replaced these with the snappier and motorized version of auto rickshaws. No wonder this cycle rickshaw is grabbing the headlines though its owner remains immune to all the uproar created by his only means of livelihood as he pedals it slowly down the narrow alley ways of Kochi.

For any ordinary city dweller, ringing of bells would denote a wedding in the nearby church or a zooming fire engine that scuttles past the city roads to douse the flames. However, in villages the ringing of bells still heralds the arrival of the candyman. With a huge brass bell dangling in his push cart he brings in all sorts of goodies to your door step. From ice sticks to cotton candy and local ice creams, his push cart is virtually a treasure trove for the village lads.Even the docile village bellies take a peek over the hedges to see what is new every time he rings the bell. Though the quality of these materials needs much to be desired, the villagers seem to have endorsed the candyman as the part and parcel of their simple yet satisfied lives.

Meet 106 year old Pathutty living in Pullarikode village in North Kerala with her two daughters well past their sixties and over one hundred of goats. She spurns every offer of assistance and proudly says that she likes to be on her two feet for the rest of her life as well. Her husband died many years ago and her sons have settled down in different places. Even today, she maintains her life style of the yore. There is no power connection in her house and life goes by unhurriedly as it was in the past. She has no major health problems and she exudes self confidence when she reiterates that she does not expect any help from anyone even at this stage. Food for thought for the younger generation who at times tend to be over dependent on others!
