Kanhilassery Siva Temple
Kanhilassery Siva Temple
The temple is located at Kanhilassery, 18-km from Kozhikode, towards Kannur on NH 17.
The deity is Shiva and the temple consecration was done by Rishi (sage) Kasyap Maharishi who had spontaneous power of travelling at the speed of thought. The deities in the temples of Kanhirangad, Kanhilassery, Kashi and Kanchipuram were installed by the Maharishi in the same Muhurtham (auspicious time) of a same day.
The idol of Shiva is in angry posture. The temple pond right in front was constructed with the intention that seeing the water always will cool down the anger.
The 5000 years old temple is similar to that of Pashupathinath temple in Nepal.
The main festival is Shivarathri in the month of Kumbam (February/March). Navarathri, Thiruvathira and Pradosham also celebrated.
Special offerings are Umamaheshwari Pooja, Mrithyunjaya Homam, Ayiramkudam Abhishekam and Sankabhishekam. Sayanapradikshanam is held here. This is a common ritual held in all the Shiva temples.
Parvathi, Ayyappan, Ganapathy, Child Ganapathy, Dhakshinamoorthy and Paradevatha are sub-deities.
