Guide to Temples in Kozhikode

Kanhilassery Siva Temple :

The temple is located at Kanhilassery, 18-km from Kozhikode, towards Kannur on NH 17.

The deity is Shiva and the temple consecration was done by Rishi (sage) Kasyap Maharishi who had spontaneous power of travelling at the speed of thought. Ponanghotur Subramanya Temple :

The temple is situated at Ponanghotur in Koduvalli. The temple is in the right bank of Cherupuzha River. From Kozhikode town to the temple the distance is about 28-km.

The presiding deity is Subramanya. Vishnu and Shiva are sub-deities who are placed on either side in separate shrines.

The sanctum sanctorums of the Subramanya and Shiva are in circular shape. The idol of Subramanya was installed by Sage Parasurama, the creator of Kerala.

Varakkal Sree Durga Deavi Temple :

The shrine is located in West Hill within the town. It is one of the 108 Durga temples and the last one founded by Parasurama. The deity is Durga Devi (Bhagawathy).

Thali Temple:

The temple, built by Samuthiris, attracts devotees in large number. The temple has also historical importance. The famed Revathi Pattathanam function was held here during the time of Samuthiris. Exponents of different culturtal arts used to display their talents in the presence of Samuthiris. The adjoining Samuthiri School was formerly Samuthiris’ Kovilakam.

Valayanad Devi Temple:

Located at Govindapura, 3-km from the town, on Mankavu road. The shrine devoted to Parvathi was built by Samuthiris on a hill-top. The Samuthiris-period architecture is reflected on the nearby Thiruvannoor and Mankavu kovilakams. Their heavy wood-work and spacious airy rooms are a speciality.

Pisharikavu Temple:

Located at 28-km away from Kozhikode town and 2-km north of Koilandi. The centuries old temple is famed for murals. The annual festival during Malayalam month Medam (April-May) is a great crowd-puller.
