A strange custom prevails in Chakkulathkavu Bhagawathi Temple. The feet of the females get washed and flowers showered by the priests, once in a year. On the first Friday of the Malayalam month, Dhanu (mid-December-mid-January). The female visitors on this day are considered as incarnations of the Devi, the deity, in the temple. The practice is stemmed from this belief.
The temple is a source for de-addiction.On Fridays, the women bring drug, drink or smoke addicted male relatives and persuade to touch Devi’s sword and swear to denounce the habit.The people vouch, once sweared, the urge to restart the habit vanishes. A form of astrology-prediction by the priests is yet another peculiarity. Go with seven betels and two arecanuts and return with fortune unfolded by the priests. They studyingly look at the betels and start predicting the fortune which experienced say used to be correct.
