A Porotta Mistress
She learned the art of porotta making from her husband Devadasan who has worked as a chef in restaurants
Porotta making is generally known as the domain of males. Swayamprabha, a native of Kottekkad in Palakkad district, has secured a place for herself in the males’ domain. She is expert in the ABC of porotta making from weaving to pleatening, waving the flattened dough in the air, making into layers, cooking them, shrinking them in hands, massaging them and final act of stacking.
She learned the art of porotta making from her husband Devadasan who has worked as a chef in restaurants. When he started his own food outlet where the customers are mostly workers she joined him to help. Porotta making requires strength and stamina and that is why this vocation is confined to males.
The Women’s Cell of Government Victoria College honoured Swayamprabha on Women’s Day.
