According to the registry of Regional Cancer Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, the premier cancer centre in the State, for the period 1982 to 2012 all types of cancer hit Muslims more than any other religion. In the case of Christians the trend is downward whereas in the matter of Hindus it is more or less static.
In the absence of a community based all Kerala study it cannot however be surely said cancer is more attractive to Muslims than other communities or religion. The present reveal is based only on RCC registry.
According to the leading oncologist Dr V P Gangadharan, Head of Oncology Department in Lakeshore Hospital at Kochi, population based study alone will bring out the real picture. He adds, one of the reasons for the reported trend may be that more patients from Malabar and less from central Travancore come to the RCC.
