Karimeen on Decline
Karimeen is going to be further tuff on the introduction of regular seaplane services in the backwaters.
Pearlspot Carp (Karimeen in vernacular), the favourite dish of Keralites and the sought-after dish of tourists is fast depleting in the State. This is mainly due to backwater tourism hike-ups and pollution. The freshwater breed Karimeen production was 4000 tons in 2002. It has now depleted to 2000 tons. The daily huge consumption by houseboats which number more than 1000 is also one of the main reasons for decline. In every houseboat Karimeen has become an inseparable item for meals as it is too delicious in curry and fry modes and liked alike by Indians and foreigners.
The alarming decline in the production of Karimeen is going to be further tuff on the introduction of regular seaplane services in the backwaters.
