Kerala is in generic drug wave to beat the spiraling cost of branded drugs
Kerala is in generic drug wave to beat the spiraling cost of branded drugs. Other States probably will follow suit sooner or later. From November 1 haves and have-nots in Kerala will get 952 varieties of generic drugs free of cost from government hospitals and health centres. In the first stage the doctors in 5 medical colleges and 3 general hospitals will prescribe only generic medicines. In the second stage 23 more hospitals/health centres will prescribe generic drugs. And in the third and final phase all government-run medical care establishments will prescribe and give generic drugs.
The scheme evolved at a big cost to the government is aimed at beating drug cartels who hikes the prices of branded drugs every now and then.
